National Tribute Honors Memory of Sally Ride, 1st American Woman in Space

WASHINGTON ?? A congresswoman, the head of NASA and members of the public gathered in the U.S. capitol Monday to honor the memory of the late Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space.

Although he didn't make an appearance during the performances here at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, President Barack Obama also honored Sally Ride on Monday (May 20). To pay tribute to Ride's groundbreaking achievements, Obama announced earlier in the day that he will award her a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom.

"We remember Sally Ride not just as a national hero, but as a role model to generations of young women," Obama said in a statement. "Sally inspired us to reach for the stars, and she advocated for a greater focus on the science, technology, engineering and math that would help us get there." [Sally Ride: America's First Female Astronaut (Photos)]

Ride died in July after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She first launched into space aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1983 and racked up more than two weeks in orbit during her two space missions. On Monday night, many of the people she inspired paid tribute to her life and work.

"Sally Ride was more than an astronaut," NASA chief Charlie Bolden said during the tribute. "She was an American treasure."

Bolden announced a new NASA internship to be created in Ride's name. The internship is designed to help students from underserved backgrounds pursue science or math as a career, space agency officials said. The internship also supports the mission of Sally Ride Science ? an organization Ride founded in 2001 to help promote women and girls in the sciences and a sponsor of Monday's event.

Part of the International Space Station is also getting a new name to honor the trailblazing astronaut. The orbiting laboratory's EarthKAM, which snaps photos of Earth from space requested by students, will be renamed the Sally Ride EarthKAM. Sally Ride Science gave hundreds of thousands of middle school students the opportunity to conduct space science by requesting images from the camera, NASA officials said.

Speakers from all walks of life cited Ride's passion and talent as overriding aspects of her life and work. Tom Brokaw and Condoleezza Rice both sent in video messages to mark the occasion.

Other attendees praised her work as a pioneer. Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski recounted her memories of seeing Ride's first space shuttle launch from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla.

The ground trembled as the space shuttle Challenger took flight, Mikulski said. "The ground was also shaking because Dr. Sally Ride was going where no woman had gone before," she added.

As well as loving science, Ride was also an avid supporter of the arts during her life. To honor that side of Ride's personality, the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra performed a moving rendition of "Clair de Lune" by Claude Debussy, a group from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts danced a piece arranged by famed choreographer Twyla Tharp, and Damian Kulash of the rock band OK Go sang "All is not Lost."

Journalist Maria Shriver and tennis player Billie Jean King also remembered Ride's life during the tribute.

"She showed that a woman can hold her own anywhere, even in the elite fellowship of the astronaut corps," King said. "Sally Ride showed us that it's okay to dream big and go for it."

(AP) ? Carole King isn't done with music ? not yet anyway.

The 71-year-old singer-songwriter known for such hits as "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" and "You've Got A Friend" was awarded the nation's highest prize for popular music in a concert Tuesday. She received the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song at the Library of Congress and will be honored Wednesday by President Barack Obama at the White House

King told The Associated Press it's a tremendous honor to be recognized at such an historic place with a place in history that she never would have expected. King is the first woman to receive the Gershwin Prize. Previous honorees include Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon.

"It is yet another of the many important messages to young women that women matter, women make a difference," King said. "That popular music is recognized by the Library of Congress as being worthy of a place in history is especially significant to me."

A concert in King's honor Wednesday at the White House will include performances by Gloria Estefan, Billy Joel, Jesse McCartney, Emeli Sande, James Taylor and Trisha Yearwood. It will be broadcast May 28 on PBS.

Last year, King hinted that she would like to retire from music as her memoir, "A Natural Woman," began to sell. But since then, she's gone on tour in Australia and plans to sing at a benefit concert to support victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Now she plans to introduce a new song during the Gershwin Prize concert that she wrote with Hal David, entitled "I Believe in Loving You." She told the AP she plans to release it as a single next month as a tribute to David, who won the prize and died last year.

"I'm hoping that this will become a song that people will want to play at their weddings," she said. "It's so romantic. Hal is such a great writer, and his words live on forever."

King said she's staying too busy to retire.

This month she received an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music along with Willie Nelson and Annie Lennox. There's even a Broadway musical in the works based on King's life.

"I still feel that it would be lovely to retire, but that time is not yet here apparently," she said.

King got her start in music from the time she could barely reach the piano growing up in Brooklyn, N.Y., constantly asking her mother, "what's that note?"

The piano, she said, brought a "magical connection" for her innate interest in music. She was hooked from the start, she said.

"I think I was drawn to it and it was drawn to me. Whatever it was, it was not something I tried to manipulate," King said. "The only thing I did do was seek to have the songs heard."

King wrote her first No. 1 hit at age 17 with "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" for the Shirelles with her then-husband Gerry Goffin. Her breakout 1971 album "Tapestry" remains one of the best-selling records of all time. It is the first female solo album to reach Diamond status, surpassing 10 million copies sold. The album included No. 1s "It's Too Late" and "I Feel the Earth Move, as well as "You've Got a Friend" recorded by James Taylor.

Hundreds of artists have recorded her songs, including The Beatles, Mary J. Blige, Cher, Phil Collins, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand and many others.

That's in part what makes King so remarkable, said Librarian of Congress James Billington.

"When the Beatles got off the plane, the first person they wanted to meet was Carole King when they first came to America," he said. "She was kind of a phenomenon among the performers themselves. That's an important endorsement."

In 1990, King and Goffin were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Singer Colbie Caillat, who performed "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" in King's honor Tuesday night, told the AP she grew up listening to King's records, especially "Tapestry," at home with her parents. She said she most admires the honesty in King's music and the simple chords that allow melodies and vocals to soar.

"When I think of her, my heart just has a warm spot because her songs just inspire me to be better as a songwriter and to be genuine and honest and open in my lyrics and melodies," Caillat said. "With the tone of her voice, she doesn't try too much. She just lets it be what it is."

Producers aim to replay King's rise to fame next year on Broadway with "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical." But King is keeping her distance. Her daughter and manager, Sherry Kondor, is shepherding the project. King said she went to a reading for the production but couldn't stay through the end. It was just too painful.

The story focuses on the 1960s when King was married to Goffin and her rise to become a musical icon, as well as their personal difficulties along the way.

"I love the idea. I support it. I think it's a wonderful story in many ways that will have resonance for people," she said. "Maybe there are things people can learn from my mistakes and also what I did right."

98% Mud

All Critics (131) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (129) | Rotten (2)

There is an enchanted-fairy-tale aspect to Mud, but its bright, calm surface only barely disguises a strong, churning undercurrent.

A modern fairy tale, steeped in the sleepy Mississippi lore of Twain and similar American writers, and with a heart as big as the river is wide.

Nichols has a strong feeling for the tactility of natural elements-water, wood, terrain, weather.

Nichols takes his time with the story, dwelling on how the boy is shaped by the killer's tragic sense of romance, yet the suspense holds.

"Mud" isn't just a movie. It's the firm confirmation of a career.

"Mud" unfolds at its own pace, revealing its story in slivers. The performances are outstanding, especially from Sheridan, who plays tough, sweet, vulnerable and confused with equal conviction.

As Mud might say, it's a hell of a thing.

The boys are so skillfully played that Mud also plays like cinema verite. Nichols' fluid camerawork suggests a documentary-style approach. That helps these young lads transform into flesh-and-blood characters who get our attention and support.

Sheridan, who played the Terrence Malick surrogate in The Tree Of Life, is terrific at conveying adolescent confusion with tiny squints and frowns, and McConaughey plays off him masterfully.

Carefully crafting films that fly just below the political radar, director-writer Jeff Nichols is slowly, but surely, reweaving the fabric of the American dream.

It's totally worth it to pay good money to see a good, little film nestled between theaters showing 'Iron Man 3' and 'The Great Gatsby.' (Complete Content Details for Parents also available)

This is a junior adventure story echoing Huckleberry Finn and Stand By Me, a tale which is in no hurry to unfold, but beautifully done, exquisitely performed, and filled with terror and wonder.

Beautifully acted, intellectually engaging, and dramatically satisfying, Mud deserves to rocket to the top of your must-see list.

Nichols is a gifted writer-director who knows how to get into the heads of his characters. And this film has superior actors who create people who are intriguing and hugely involving.

'Mud' is a standout film in this 'coming of age' genre mainly because of its central character, one tough, warm-hearted, stubborn little kid who believes in the power of love, above all else.

Other than pacing problems that needlessly stretch the film past the two-hour mark, 'Mud' slings the dirt and sweat with the best of them, as it both mourns and celebrates a way of life that's all but disappeared.

A sublime coming-of-age film, 'Mud' would be the offspring if 'Stand By Me' and 'Cape Fear' reproduced.

Mud is a movie of striking performances and memorable images and of people who seem to belong in rather than being imposed upon their environment.

A brilliant metaphor for how a child deals with divorce.

This might be Mud. But it deserves to stick.

This is a film that gives McConaughey the chance to be an actor rather than a star, and, not for the first time, he grabs the opportunity.

Gone is the rom-com character and emphasis on a toothy smile and six-pack abs. Matthew McConaughey is showing off some acting chops.

Mud is, perhaps, a little longer than it needed to be, but few sensitive viewers will begrudge Nichols his indulgence. This director is the real thing.

Writer-director Nichols continues to get inside the heads of his characters with this involving but overlong dramatic thriller.

Belmont Stakes: Oxbow vs. Orb in the cards

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Another year, another Triple Crown hopeful unable to come through.

After Oxbow upset Kentucky Derby winner Orb in Saturday's Preakness to extend racing's Triple Crown drought to 36 years, the next best alternative for the Belmont Stakes is a rematch.

And, it appears one is in the making. Both trainers are giving every indication their classic-winning colts will run in the Belmont on June 8.

"You know me," Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said after Oxbow's 1 ?-length victory over Itsmyluckyday, with 3-5 favorite Orb finishing fourth. "I like to rack them up in the big events. So, I'll probably go."

Trainer Shug McGaughey says he'd like to run Orb in the Belmont as long as the colt is doing well.

"The Belmont Stakes is on our radar screen," McGaughey said Sunday after arriving back at Belmont Park and checking on his Derby winner, who was vanned back earlier in the day.

After a talk with Orb's owners Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps and Stuart Janney III, McGaughey said, "We just all came to the conclusion that we should just watch Orb and see. I think everything is in good shape. We'd like to run.

"But yesterday took a little bit out of him and he's already run five times this year and it's only the middle of May. I'd sure like to have him fresh for Saratoga and a Jim Dandy/Travers kind of a go."

A year ago, there was great anticipation for a Triple try after I'll Have Another won the Derby and Preakness, but the colt was scratched the day before the Belmont because of a tendon injury.

The most recent of 20 rematches between classic winners in the Belmont was two years ago, with Derby winner Animal Kingdom and Preakness winner Shackleford hooking up ? but 24-1 long shot Ruler On Ice pulled the upset.

Hours after Oxbow's win at 15-1 odds gave Lukas his record 14th Triple Crown race win ? and sixth Preakness ? the trainer and his colt where on the road back to Churchill Downs.

If both show up for the 1? -mile Belmont, a formidable lineup of challengers could be waiting. Todd Pletcher has five possible starters: Derby runners Revolutionary (third), Overanalyze (11th) and Palace Malice (12th), as well as a pair of fillies in Dreaming of Julia and Unlimited Budget.

Other possibles include Derby runner-up Golden Soul, Mylute (fifth in the Derby, third in the Preakness), Freedom Child, Power Broker and Code West.

McGaughey was disappointed he couldn't follow up his first Derby win with his first Preakness win, but said, "Winning the Derby was my lifetime dream and we won it. I would have loved to have won yesterday and taken it to the next level."

Lukas, meanwhile, won his first Triple Crown race since 2000, when Commendable won the Belmont. Since that win, Lukas was 0-for-31 in 22 Triple Crown races before Saturday.

"I still enjoy doing this so much," he said. "I don't wake up every day anymore trying to prove I can train a racehorse. When you're younger, you keep trying to prove yourself. I'm very comfortable with where I'm at."

Oxbow, ridden by Hall of Famer Gary Stevens, took the lead just after the start and led every step of the way. Orb never seemed to get into his long-striding running style after leaving from the inside No. 1 post and didn't make a serious run for the lead.

The winning time of 1:57.54 was the slowest since 1961, when Carry Back won in 1:57.60. No matter, it gave Stevens his third Preakness win to go along with his three Derby and three Belmonts wins. Not bad for a guy coming back after a seven-year retirement.

"I can't say that we thought we were going to win," the 50-year Hall of Fame rider said, "but we knew we had a chance to win."

The win was a big one for Calumet Farm, too, the iconic stable being revitalized by new owner Brad Kelley. The stable that produced Triple Crown champions Whirlaway in 1941 and Citation in 1948 won its first classic since Forward Pass took the Preakness in the 1968.

"They're all special because they were with a different client," Lukas said when asked to compare his Preakness wins. "The key is to get one every once in a while for the new guy. We've got a new guy in Brad Kelley at Calumet. And to know he was watching at home and put Calumet, who we all know that name, back on the front pages of the racing publications is very special."

Switched On: Hinging on success

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

DNP Switched On Hinging on success

The announcement of the Acer Aspire R7 was the best example of the company's assertion that it was moving from computers designed with touch to computers designed for touch. But if having a fancy, even unprecedented, hinge is what defines a touch-optimized notebook, Acer is a bit late to the party.

Last October, Switched On discussed the role that laptop-tablet hybrids -- namely convertibles and detachables -- would play in the differentiation of Windows 8 devices. Both types have seen their share of support. Detachables have included HP's Envy x2, ASUS' Transformer-inspired VivoTab and Microsoft's Surface. (Dell's XPS 10 is available only with Windows RT.)

Wyo. student who threatened to rape self on Facebook was convicted of assault

The 28-year-old University of Wyoming student who allegedly threatened herself with rape in a Facebook hoax in April was convicted of aggravated assault in 2005 after she brandished a gun at an employer who fired her.

Meg Lanker-Simons, now a newly-minted UW graduate, was charged with interference with a police investigation after she allegedly posted on an anonymous Facebook forum that she wanted to engage in angry sexual intercourse ? with someone named ?Meg Lanker Simons.?

The posting on UW Crushes read:

?I want to hatefuck Meg Lanker Simons so hard. That chick runs her liberal mouth all the time and doesn?t care who knows it. I think its so hot and makes me angry. One night with me and shes gonna be a good Republican bitch.?

It turns out that the April 24 incident isn?t the strident leftist?s first rodeo in Wyoming?s criminal system. As the Laramie Boomerang reports, Lanker-Simons had an aggravated assault conviction in 2005 as the result of a bizarre gun-brandishing incident.

After Lanker-Simons was fired from a radio station in the fall of 2005, she returned and pulled a Glock 22 .40 caliber handgun from her purse. She waved the semi-automatic pistol around. She pointed it at the man who sacked her. He testified that he was ?in fear for his life,? notes the Boomerang.

The radio station was evacuated. Police caught Lanker-Simons as she tried to flee the scene in her vehicle. They held her at gunpoint.

In July 2006, Lanker-Simons ? then known as Meghan Michelena ? was sentenced to six years of probation. Her term of probation was subject to a number of conditions. She had to undergo counseling, complete community service, pay fines and apologize to her victims. She was also prevented from owning any guns.

The alleged Facebook hoax brought national attention to the Cowboy State?s flagship college. Initially, the administration stood firmly behind Lanker-Simons. ?No student should have to deal with such threatening language,? said one sternly-worded official statement. A school official also denounced ?rape culture,? according to KOWB.

Concerned fellow feminists also threw a rally for Lanker-Simons ? complete with all manner of signs condemning rape threats ? before police concluded that Lanker-Simons herself was behind the threats.

This month, Lanker-Simons participated in the University of Wyoming?s commencement ceremonies despite the charges against her. She graduated with a bachelor?s degree in psychology.

Lanker-Simons is also a blogger and a local radio host.

In 2010, Lanker-Simons and Bill Ayers sued the University of Wyoming after school officials decided to cancel a speech by Ayers, a former Weather Underground radical and mentor to President Obama. Also in 2010, her husband, Andrew Simons, ran a failed Democratic campaign for Wyoming secretary of state.

According to the Boomerang, the interference charge is a misdemeanor punishable by a prison sentence up to a year and a fine up to $1,000.

Nearly 50 hurt as two trains collide in Connecticut

(Reuters) - Nearly 50 people were injured on Friday when two commuter trains collided during evening rush hour near the Connecticut town of Fairfield, shutting down Amtrak service between New York and Boston indefinitely, police and transit officials said.

Authorities said there were no reports of fatalities in the accident that occurred shortly after 6 p.m. EDT (2200 GMT).

Anita Shrum, a spokeswoman for Bridgeport Hospital, said one person was seriously injured but the other 21 people it had received could be described as "walking wounded" with a variety of injuries. "They are doing OK, they are very stable," Shrum said.

Dianne Auger, a spokeswoman for St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, said one of the 27 people taken there was in serious condition with head and neck injuries. Commuter trains on this busy commuter line to New York typically carry up to 300 passengers.

The number of injured could rise because hospital officials were told to prepare to receive up to 180 patients total.

The accident occurred when an eastbound train on the Metro-North commuter rial line derailed and collided with a train headed in the opposite direction near the suburban town of Fairfield, said spokesman Aaron Donovan of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, which runs the railroad.

Amtrak officials said in a statement that it suspended service indefinitely on the heavily traveled Northeast Corridor between Boston and New York.

The cause of the derailment was not immediately known. Fairfield is about 50 miles north of New York City.

(AP) ? Former Groupon CEO Andrew Mason is diving into several new ventures, including indulging his inner rock star with an album of "motivational business music."

Mason said Thursday on his blog that he recently spent a week in Los Angeles and recorded a collection of seven songs called "Hardly Workin'."

Mason said he wants to present business wisdom to younger people and that the songs will help them understand ideas that are critical to becoming productive and effective employees. He said many of Groupon's employees are young and many didn't have much familiarity with business, and didn't want to read books on the subject.

Mason plans to start a new company in the fall. He didn't disclose details but said he'll be moving to San Francisco from Chicago. He also said he is taking an advisory position at Y Combinator, a selective incubator program that supports development of entrepreneurial companies. Mason said he will spend one day every week at the firm's offices and will advise new startups.

Mason did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Technology media website TechCrunch said it had confirmed with Mason that he was serious about the album.

Mason founded Groupon, an online deals site. He was fired as CEO in February. The move had been anticipated for months, given concerns about the company's financial and stock performance.

The winner of 'American Idol' is ...

FOX

Candice Glover and Kree Harrison battled it out for the title of "American Idol."

The third time proved to be the charm for Candice Glover, as she was crowned the ?American Idol? season 12 champion on Thursday over Kree Harrison.

For Candice, who auditioned in season nine and season 11 but failed to make the live shows both times, her face showed a mixture of redemption, joy and relief. She broke down closing the show with ?I Am Beautiful,? her debut single, but she can surely expect a lot of iTunes pre-orders anyway.

Before that, she got to display her vocal power one last time in her finale duet with Jennifer Hudson. That performance illustrated why Candice won. She made it very easy for everyone to see the type of singer she could become, and the pairing of the two was one of the most inspired in ?Idol? finale history, which, to be sure, is not lavish praise.

It?s also important to note that even Jennifer Hudson was not the vocal behemoth she is now back when she was an ?Idol? hopeful in season three. She grew tremendously after being voted off the show, and Candice?s task is to develop at a similar level now that she?s the champion.

Kree, meanwhile, performed her own celebrity duet with Keith Urban, and while it was enjoyable to watch, it illustrated her drawback. She has a very compelling story and is a talented singer. It would not have been an outrage had she won. But it was also less apparent what kind of singer she wanted to be. Is she country? Soul? Pop? Sometimes it seemed like she wasn?t sure herself, and the fact that Ryan Seacrest didn?t give his usual ?only a handful of votes separated the finalists? speech may have indicated that it wasn?t that close.

As usual, the final ?Idol? episode of the season was a night of random pairings and guest stars, the bells and whistles that remind the audience how dull all the other results shows were in comparison. Some of the matchups worked (Angie Miller and Adam Lambert singing ?Titanium?). Some of them didn?t (Angie and Jessie J). The boys got to sing live with Frankie Valli. The girls got Aretha Franklin as their singing partner, but only via satellite hookup from New York. Janelle Arthur got to sing with The Band Perry, and Amber Holcomb with Emeli Sande.

Original judge Randy Jackson received a send-off with a short video tribute that reminded everyone how much fresher the show was a decade ago when Simon Cowell looked a little scruffier and Randy hadn?t yet work his catchphrases into the ground. Another video short blamed sabotage from the girls and Jordin Sparks for the quick exit of the male finalists, and featured a random dig at ?The Voice? as well as acknowledgement that none of the male finalists played the guitar as the last five winners did might have been a factor in their defeat this season. Other clips allowed the contestants to made fun of the judges, and served as the usual highlights montage of ?oh, yeah, I remember THAT? moments.

Meanwhile, all the judges got to perform live onstage ? except Nicki Minaj. (Well, and perhaps Mariah Carey, given what looked like a miserable lip-synching effort on her part.) Even Jennifer Lopez got to strut her stuff, and she?s just an ex-judge. Viewerss also saw Randy play the bass, but not Nicki singing ?Super Bass.? (It doesn?t take a soothsayer to note that?s not a good sign for the chances of her returning.)

But give ?Idol? some credit: Unlike in past years, they did not bring back terrible auditions to serve as punch lines one more time. Although, Lazaro Arbos was chewing his gum with such fury on stage that maybe he was supposed to fill that role.

Now begins an uncertain offseason for ?Idol,? with major changes likely to come. But in the meantime, the show?s executives can rest easy knowing that it wound up with the right champion in season 12.

What did you think of the results? Will you be buying Candice's debut album? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Visualized Google Glass prototypes

As a part of the 7 Techmakers and a Microphone panel tonight at Google I/O, Project Glass Staff Hardware Engineer Jean Wang dropped in this slide reflecting on the process of developing the headset. We've seen pictures of a few early Glass prototypes before, but as she describes, this shows off the full process from strapping a cellphone to a pair of goggles along with a pico projector shining directly into the wearer's eyes. The jump from off the shelf components to custom 3D-printed materials is represented in the third version (top right), and allowed the progress seen along the bottom row.

She also got a laugh pointing out that the Glass-inspired SNL skit starring our friend Fred Armisen wasn't "too far off" the team's initial efforts in gesture and voice control. The panel itself focused on a series of TED-style segments featuring seven women discussing being technical leaders inside their company. You can check out the entire thing embedded after the break or just zoom to the Google Glass part (6:13) for more details.

Human skin cells converted into embryonic stem cells: First time human stem cells have been produced via nuclear transfer

May 15, 2013 ? Scientists at Oregon Health & Science University and the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) have successfully reprogrammed human skin cells to become embryonic stem cells capable of transforming into any other cell type in the body. It is believed that stem cell therapies hold the promise of replacing cells damaged through injury or illness. Diseases or conditions that might be treated through stem cell therapy include Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, cardiac disease and spinal cord injuries.

The research breakthrough, led by Shoukhrat Mitalipov, Ph.D., a senior scientist at ONPRC, follows previous success in transforming monkey skin cells into embryonic stem cells in 2007. This latest research will be published in the journal Cell online May 15 and in print June 6.

The technique used by Drs. Mitalipov, Paula Amato, M.D., and their colleagues in OHSU's Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, is a variation of a commonly used method called somatic cell nuclear transfer, or SCNT. It involves transplanting the nucleus of one cell, containing an individual's DNA, into an egg cell that has had its genetic material removed. The unfertilized egg cell then develops and eventually produces stem cells.

"A thorough examination of the stem cells derived through this technique demonstrated their ability to convert just like normal embryonic stem cells, into several different cell types, including nerve cells, liver cells and heart cells. Furthermore, because these reprogrammed cells can be generated with nuclear genetic material from a patient, there is no concern of transplant rejection," explained Dr. Mitalipov. "While there is much work to be done in developing safe and effective stem cell treatments, we believe this is a significant step forward in developing the cells that could be used in regenerative medicine."

Another noteworthy aspect of this research is that it does not involve the use of fertilized embryos, a topic that has been the source of a significant ethical debate.

The Mitalipov team's success in reprogramming human skin cells came through a series of studies in both human and monkey cells. Previous unsuccessful attempts by several labs showed that human egg cells appear to be more fragile than eggs from other species. Therefore, known reprogramming methods stalled before stem cells were produced.

To solve this problem, the OHSU group studied various alternative approaches first developed in monkey cells and then applied to human cells. Through moving findings between monkey cells and human cells, the researchers were able to develop a successful method.

The key to this success was finding a way to prompt egg cells to stay in a state called "metaphase" during the nuclear transfer process. Metaphase is a stage in the cell's natural division process (meiosis) when genetic material aligns in the middle of the cell before the cell divides. The research team found that chemically maintaining metaphase throughout the transfer process prevented the process from stalling and allowed the cells to develop and produce stem cells.

"This is a remarkable accomplishment by the Mitalipov lab that will fuel the development of stem cell therapies to combat several diseases and conditions for which there are currently no treatments or cures," said Dr. Dan Dorsa, Ph.D., OHSU Vice President for Research. "The achievement also highlights OHSU's deep reproductive expertise across our campuses. A key component to this success was the translation of basic science findings at the OHSU primate center paired with privately funded human cell studies."

One important distinction is that while the method might be considered a technique for cloning stem cells, commonly called therapeutic cloning, the same method would not likely be successful in producing human clones otherwise known as reproductive cloning. Several years of monkey studies that utilize somatic cell nuclear transfer have never successfully produced monkey clones. It is expected that this is also the case with humans. Furthermore, the comparative fragility of human cells as noted during this study, is a significant factor that would likely prevent the development of clones.

"Our research is directed toward generating stem cells for use in future treatments to combat disease," added Dr. Mitalipov. "While nuclear transfer breakthroughs often lead to a public discussion about the ethics of human cloning, this is not our focus, nor do we believe our findings might be used by others to advance the possibility of human reproductive cloning."

Aquos Pad SH-08E flaunts 7-inch high-res IGZO display, 1.7GHz quad-core processor

Amid the bevy of phones outed in NTT DoCoMo's summer lineup, the Japanese carrier snuck in a tablet: Sharp's Aquos Pad SH-08E. A 7-inch 1,920 x 1,200 IGZO display dominates the front of the Android 4.2 device, while a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor and a 4,200mAh battery are tucked inside. When it comes to imaging, the slab totes an 8.1-megapixel shooter on its rear, and wears a 2.1-megapixel cam on the front. The hardware's also been kitted out with WiFi, NFC and TV tuning capabilities, along with waterproofing and dustproofing, to boot. As the slate's outfitted to work with DoCoMo's Xi LTE network, it's capable of sucking down 100Mbps and uploading at 37.5Mbps. There's no word on how much it'll empty wallets, but it's penciled in to be available in Japan by the end of July.

PocketWizard PlusX

The PocketWizard Plus X ($99 list) is a wireless transceiver that allows you to trigger a remote flash, and can also perform a few other neat tricks. It automatically detects whether it's attached to a camera or to a strobe, and with the right cable you can use it to remotely trigger certain SLRs. This gives it a versatility that goes beyond other units, and its 1,600-foot operating range gives you plenty of room to customize your lighting setup. You'll need a pair of transceivers to get started, unless you already own PocketWizard equipment. There's no limit to how many strobes you can fire from one Plus X, so your only limitation is your budget.

The Plus X is a simple looking device. It's powered by two AA batteries and its only controls are a power switch and a Test button. There's a big backlit dial on its face that allows you to set it to a channel. And there's also a color indicator on the top of the unit to tell you how much juice is left in your batteries. Green means you've got more than 50 percent, yellow is less than 50 percent, and red is less than 25 percent, a good sign that you should find a new set of AAs, or recharge the ones you're currently using.

There's a standard shoe, so it can mount on top of your D-SLR, but there's no hot shoe on the Plus X itself, so you'll need a cable to connect it to a flash. Some other wireless triggers have shoes for direct mounting of strobes; a simple bracket will allow you to mount the strobe and the PocketWizard to the same light stand, and you could opt to use twist ties or a rubber band to secure the transceiver to the stand. A 3.5mm port is located on the side of the Plus X, and cables are included to connect to a strobe or camera via a standard PC Sync socket, a 1/4-inch socket, or a 3.5mm socket. And there's a standard tripod thread, so mounting is easy, if required.

The Plus X is one of the simplest triggers that I've used. I tested it along with a Vivitar 283 strobe as well as an old set of Speedotron studio strobes. The Impact PowerSync16 trigger system ($150) works fine with the Vivitar strobe, but fails to trigger the Speedotron lights. The Plus X is rated to work with strobes that output 300 volts, which is enough to destroy the circuitry in most modern digital cameras. That alone is reason for owners of ancient strobes to use it to trigger them rather than a wired connection. If you have older lighting equipment and are unsure of its trigger voltage you'll need to use a multimeter to test it.

There's no support for TTL metering with this model; a TTL system allows the camera to control the power outputted by a flash. PocketWizard does offer models that offer full support for modern Nikon and Canon flashes. Those are a bit more expensive?the miniTT1 transmitter is $200 and the FlexTT5 transceiver is $230. If you don't mind mixing non-TTL lights with your TTL-controlled strobes, the miniTT1 and FlexTT5 do send out a signal that triggers the Plus X; just be sure that all of your devices are set to the same channel.

If you have enough transceivers you can even set off a remote flash and a camera simultaneously. Connect one Plus X to your camera's remote control port, and keep another in your hand, both set to the same channel. The third transceiver connects to your strobes and should be set to the next highest channel. Pressing the Test button on the Plus X in your hand will trigger the remote camera, and the Plus X connected to it will trigger the strobes.

Sync speeds of up to 1/250-second are supported when using cameras with focal plane shutters and up to 1/500-second with leaf shutter cameras. I tested the Plus X with the Olympus OM-D E-M5 at 1/250-second and with a Hasselblad 500EL/M at 1/500-second; both cameras synced perfectly at the top speed. Every camera that I connected to the Plus X triggered my lights without issue.

If you don't require TTL power control, the PlusX is a solid option for triggering remote lighting. It's more expensive than off-brand alternatives; a similar CowboyStudio trigger set sells for only $30, but offers fewer radio channels, can only handle a 12V trigger voltage, and is limited to a shorter 100-foot operating range. If you have very basic lighting needs it may be worth it to try a less expensive option first, but if you want something that you know will work, and work consistently, spending the extra money on the PocketWizard Plus X is worth it. It works with the consistency necessary for use in professional settings, and is compatible with other PocketWizard devices.

Ravens LB McClain retires before playing with team

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) ? Linebacker Rolando McClain has told the Baltimore Ravens that he's retiring from the NFL.

The 23-year-old McClain played three seasons with the Oakland Raiders before signing a one-year contract with Baltimore as a free agent on April 12.

"Rolando let me know that he plans to retire from the NFL," Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said Wednesday. "We have placed him on the Reserve/Retired list."

Ten days after signing with the Ravens, McClain was arrested in Decatur, Alabama, and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

It was the third time McClain was arrested in Decatur since 2011. He was previously charged in a 2011 shooting, and police arrested him in January on charges of having his car windows tinted too darkly and trying to lie about his identity.

McClain was sentenced to jail on an assault charge after the shooting, but prosecutors later dismissed the case.

A city judge dismissed the January charge against McClain of trying to lie about his identity. He pleaded guilty to the window tint violation and paid a $182 fine.

Before joining the Ravens, McClain spent his first three NFL seasons with the Oakland Raiders. He was the eighth overall pick in the 2010 draft out of Alabama.

In 41 games with Oakland he had 274 tackles, 6? sacks and one interception. In his final season, he was suspended for two games for conduct detrimental to the team.

Japanese mayor: Wartime sex slaves were necessary

TOKYO (AP) ? An outspoken nationalist mayor said the Japanese military's forced prostitution of Asian women before and during World War II was necessary to "maintain discipline" in the ranks and provide rest for soldiers who risked their lives in battle.

The comments made Monday are already raising ire in neighboring countries that bore the brunt of Japan's wartime aggression and have long complained that Japan has failed to fully atone for wartime atrocities.

Toru Hashimoto, the young, brash mayor of Osaka who is co-leader of an emerging conservative political party, also said that U.S. troops currently based in southern Japan should patronize the local sex industry more to help reduce rapes and other assaults.

Hashimoto told reporters on Monday that there wasn't clear evidence that the Japanese military had coerced women to become what are euphemistically called "comfort women" before and during World War II.

"To maintain discipline in the military, it must have been necessary at that time," Hashimoto said. "For soldiers who risked their lives in circumstances where bullets are flying around like rain and wind, if you want them to get some rest, a comfort women system was necessary. That's clear to anyone."

Historians say up to 200,000 women, mainly from the Korean Peninsula and China, were forced to provide sex for Japanese soldiers in military brothels.

China's Foreign Ministry criticized the mayor's comments and saw them as further evidence of a rightward drift in Japanese politics under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

"We are appalled and indignant about the Japanese politician's comments boldly challenging humanity and historical justice," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a daily media briefing. "The way they treat the past will determine the way Japan walks toward the future. On what choice Japan will make, the Asian neighbors and the international community will wait and see."

Asked about a photo of Abe posing in a fighter jet with the number 731 ? the number of a notorious, secret Japanese unit that performed chemical and biological experiments on Chinese in World War II ? Hong again urged Japan not to whitewash history so as to improve relations with countries that suffered under Japanese occupation.

"There is a mountain of definitive iron-hard evidence for the crimes they committed in the Second World War. We hope Japan will face and contemplate their history of aggression and treat it correctly," Hong said.

Abe posed, thumbs up, in the aircraft during a weekend visit to northeastern Japan.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry expressed disappointment over what it called a senior Japanese official's serious lack of historical understanding and respect for women's rights. It asked Japan's leaders to reflect on their country's imperial past, including grave human rights violations, and correct anachronistic historical views.

Hashimoto said he recently visited Okinawa in southern Japan and told the U.S. commander there "to make better use of the sex industry."

"He froze, and then with a wry smile said that is off-limits for the U.S. military," he said.

"I told him that there are problems because of such formalities," Hashimoto said, explaining that he was not referring to illegal prostitution but to places operating within the law. "If you don't make use of those places you cannot properly control the sexual energy of those tough guys."

Calls to the after-hours number for U.S. Forces in Japan were not answered.

Hashimoto's comments came amid continuing criticism of Abe's earlier pledges to revise Japan's past apologies for wartime atrocities. Before he took office in December, Abe had advocated revising a 1993 statement by then Prime Minister Yohei Kono acknowledging and expressing remorse for the suffering caused to the sexual slaves of Japanese troops.

Abe has acknowledged "comfort women" existed but has denied they were coerced into prostitution, citing a lack of official evidence.

Recently, top officials in Abe's government have appeared to backpedal on suggestions the government might revise those apologies, apparently hoping to ease tensions with South Korea and China and address U.S. concerns about Abe's nationalist agenda.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga repeated the previous government position and said those women went through unbearable pain.

"The stance of the Japanese government on the comfort women issue is well known. They have suffered unspeakably painful experiences. The Abe Cabinet has the same sentiments as past Cabinets," he said.

Education Minister Hakubun Shimomura said Hashimoto's remark was unhelpful given the criticism Japan faces from neighboring countries and the U.S. over its interpretation of history.

"A series of remarks related to our interpretation of (wartime) history have been already misunderstood. In that sense, Mr. Hashimoto's remark came at a bad time," Shimomura told reporters. "I wonder if there is any positive meaning to intentionally make such remarks at this particular moment."

Hashimoto, 43, is co-head of the newly formed Japan Restoration Party with former Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara, who is a strident nationalist.

Sakihito Ozawa, the party's parliamentary affairs chairman, said he believed Hashimoto's remarks reflected his personal views, but he expressed concerns about possible repercussions.

"We should ask his real intentions and stop this at some point," he said.

Britain's Cameron faces leadership questions over Europe

By Guy Faulconbridge and Andrew Osborn

LONDON/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron faced questions about his leadership on Tuesday after he buckled to pressure from within the Conservative Party to bring forward draft legislation enforcing a referendum on Britain's European Union membership.

Just hours after U.S. President Barack Obama cautioned against rushing towards the EU exit, Cameron was forced by a rebellion in his party into promising a bill that would pave the way for an in-out vote on Europe.

But the more Cameron concedes to his Eurosceptic lawmakers, the more they want, deepening the 25-year battle in his party over Europe and undermining his own chances of leading the party to victory in a general election set for 2015.

Divisions over Europe helped bring down the last two Conservative prime ministers, Margaret Thatcher and John Major, and many politicians compared Cameron's position to that of Major whose premiership was riven by rows over Europe.

"There is no way that he (Cameron) can give in any further because he's undermining his own position," said Sheila Gunn, who served as spokeswoman to Major.

"Every time he gives in, the so-called rebels who want Britain to get out of the EU very quickly - will just ask for something more. It's unraveling the knitting. Every time they pull at that knitting, they unravel a bit, they then ask for something more and now it's getting to the point where it's affecting his own position."

Cameron's advisers hope the draft bill on an EU vote will end the bickering that has damaged the party's.

But opponents said that by caving in on such a grave issue, Cameron has lost control of his own party and increased the chances of a challenge to his leadership.

A Downing Street spokesman insisted Cameron was in charge on Tuesday and dismissed the idea that his government was in chaos.

"David Cameron's weakness has turned a European issue into a leadership issue," Labour foreign affairs spokesman Douglas Alexander said.

Cameron's offer of draft legislation marked a climbdown from a promise he made in January to renegotiate the terms of Britain's EU membership and then hold a referendum by the end of 2017.

But some lawmakers had called for further concessions and media reports said Cameron's leadership could be challenged.

Potential rivals include London Mayor Boris Johnson and Education Secretary Michael Gove.

'BANGING ON ABOUT EUROPE'

The three eurosceptic Conservative Party leaders who followed Major failed to get into power and Cameron, in his first conference speech as party leader, warned that Conservatives had become too obsessed by Europe.

"While parents worried about childcare, getting the kids to school, balancing work and family life - we were banging on about Europe," he told the party conference in October 2006.

But since coming to power in a coalition government three years ago, the Conservatives have been rattled by the popularity of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), which campaigns for Britain's withdrawal from the EU and tighter immigration laws.

A Guardian/ICM poll showed that UKIP's support had surged to a record high of 18 percent, while support for Britain's traditional parties had fallen by 4 percentage points each.

UKIP took a quarter of the vote in local elections this month and unless Cameron can convince his party that he can win the next election he is likely to face more challenges to his leadership.

"With the story changing every day, it's very reminiscent of the old John Major days where, really, the government appears to be being blown around by events," said UKIP leader Nigel Farage.

The Guardian poll put Labour on 34 percent, the Conservatives on 28 percent and their coalition partners the Liberal Democrats on 11 percent.

UKIP's poll rating has climbed steadily since Cameron's pledge in January to renegotiate the terms of Britain's EU membership and hold a referendum by the end of 2017.

BREXIT?

Cameron's referendum promise then failed to satisfy Conservative critics who have been pressing him to bring forward the vote to before the next national election in 2015 or to pass a law committing the party to holding a vote by the end of 2017.

Many Conservatives say they want to be part of the EU's single market but that the closer integration of the euro zone means Britain should renegotiate its membership or leave.

About half of British voters want to leave the European Union, which is viewed as anti-democratic and bureaucratic by many British politicians, but for voters utility bills, education and the economy are far more important.

Cameron's bid to renegotiate the terms of Britain's membership has concerned the United States which has warned London that it would lose influence in the world if it did leave the world's biggest economic bloc.

Obama told Cameron on Monday that EU membership was an expression of British influence but delighted Cameron's advisers by appearing to endorse his attempt to fix the relationship.

Germany and France, the only EU economies bigger than Britain, have warned that Cameron cannot "cherry pick" EU policy.

Cameron's policy has also divided his two-party coalition and the EU vote bill is almost certain be opposed by their pro-EU coalition partners, the Liberal Democrats.

Despite Cameron's latest concession, up to 100 Eurosceptic Conservative members of parliament are still expected to back a different amendment this week criticizing legislative plans unveiled by the government because they did not include such a bill.

Conservative lawmaker John Baron, one of the two figures behind the amendment, said Cameron's promise of a draft bill would not persuade him to back down.

"I am sticking by what I am saying. They know that this option could very well fail," he told Reuters. "A far better approach would be to have the courage to support our amendment on Wednesday."
